Migraciones, interculturalidad y relaciones laborales

The seminar dealt with fundamental aspects of nowadays reality of job market. With globalization, the bigger flux of people around the world and the shortening of distances and communications, yes, there has been significant attention on issues of discrimination on work, especially towards employees that represent minorities. Mr. Núñez pointed that “we” need to find concrete juridical solutions to stop discriminative actions and that the International Labour Organization (ILO) had a major role in harmonising conducts, demanding social, economic and cultural rights to be respected. However, what Mr. Núñez did not seem to tackle on the seminar was the effectiveness on the long run of such practises.

I am afraid I am a deeply sceptic of Law as an instrument of coercion and guarantee of a “rightfull” conduct. The issue I would like to raise here is: Does the absence of unlawfull action mean true harmony between individuals of different cultures? I would first like to answer to that saying that conflict is an inherent part of human nature, therefore making impossible to eliminate entirely conflicts, especially in the work area. Secondly, way more effective than the fear of being punished for an action categorized as “wrong”, education provides tools that not only transform people’s perceptions but also offers a longlasting approach on respect towards others, because it enhances people’s critical thinking. The conduct derived from an educational approach, rather than a punitive one, proves to be more effective on families that are raising children. Facing life as a neverlasting educational process, I don’t see a reason why wouldn’t people learn and acquire new perceptions of others that might be more peacefull on work, rather than the perception of punishment for doing things that are considered wrong and that nobody ever explained to him/her why it is wrong. This is why I prefer to look at education as a much better approach to issues related to interculturality compared to law, as presented on this seminar.
